A Lombok Story: Journey into Culture, Ritual and Tradition
Welcome to the vibrant tapestry of Lombok’s culture, where age-old traditions, captivating customs, and warm-hearted people intertwine to create a truly unique and enriching experience. Nestled as Bali’s neighboring gem, Lombok stands as a testament to the richness of Indonesian heritage. From its spirited rituals to its intricate customs, this island’s cultural landscape invites you to explore and appreciate a world that is both captivatingly distinct and harmoniously interconnected. In this exploration, we will unravel the essence of Lombok’s culture, delve into its cherished customs, and get acquainted with the gracious souls that call this island home.
The history of Lombok and its culture
The history of Lombok unfolds as a captivating narrative of cultural exchange, trade, and the evolution of a resilient community. With roots tracing back to ancient times, Lombok has been a crossroads of civilizations, where merchants from China, India, and Arabia once converged, leaving their indelible marks on the island’s heritage. The indigenous Sasak people established their presence here, shaping the island’s identity with their unique customs and beliefs. Over the centuries, Lombok became a part of various maritime empires, witnessing the ebb and flow of power and influence. This dynamic history is reflected in the island’s diverse architecture, traditions, and way of life, creating a tapestry that resonates with tales of adaptation, strength, and the enduring spirit of its inhabitants.
Lombok Culture and Sasak style
The Sasak culture is a rich tapestry of traditions, beliefs, and practices that have been woven into the fabric of Lombok’s identity for centuries. The Sasak people are the indigenous inhabitants of the island, and their culture is deeply rooted in their history, social structure, and way of life.
Historically, Lombok was divided into several small kingdoms, each with its own ruling family and localized governance. These kingdoms played a significant role in shaping the island’s history and culture. The most notable of these kingdoms were the four principal Sasak kingdoms: Bayan, Rambitan, Sengkol, and Sade.
Each kingdom had its own distinct customs and traditions. The Sasak people practiced a mix of animism and Islam, creating a unique blend of spiritual beliefs that influenced their rituals and ceremonies. The traditional Sasak architecture, such as the unique thatched-roof houses known as “bale,” is a testament to their creativity and adaptability to the island’s environment.
The Sasak people are renowned for their intricate handwoven textiles, such as songket and ikat, which are not only a symbol of their craftsmanship but also hold cultural and spiritual significance. These textiles are often used in ceremonies, weddings, and other important events.
The Sasak society is organized around kinship and community bonds, and the traditional Sasak village structure reflects this close-knit social fabric. Villages are usually centered around a communal space where rituals, gatherings, and performances take place. The Gendang Beleq, a traditional music ensemble, is an integral part of Sasak culture and is used in various celebrations and ceremonies.
Despite the influences of modernization, the Sasak culture continues to thrive, and efforts are being made to preserve and promote its unique aspects. The kingdoms might have evolved into a more symbolic role, but their legacy lives on in the cultural practices, artistic expressions, and the strong sense of identity of the Sasak people, making them an integral part of Lombok’s captivating heritage.
Lombok Culture and Customs
Lombok’s cultural calendar is adorned with a rich tapestry of important customs and dates, each reflecting the island’s heritage, beliefs, and vibrant traditions. Here are some of the noteworthy customs and cultural events that hold a special place in the hearts of the Sasak people and the wider Lombok community:
Perang Topat
This annual festival celebrates the rice harvest and is a unique blend of Sasak animism and Islam. It involves a friendly rice cake war, where participants throw rice cakes at each other in a joyous and playful manner. This tradition symbolizes unity, gratitude, and prosperity.
Nyale Festival
Held during the full moon in February or March, the Nyale Festival marks the time when sea worms known as nyale come to the shore. This event is celebrated with fishing competitions, traditional performances, and rituals, as the worms are believed to be a sign of good fortune and fertility.
Rambu Solo
This elaborate and sacred death ritual is a culmination of a person’s life in the Sasak culture. It involves a series of ceremonies that include prayers, offerings, and the funeral procession. The event is an opportunity for the community to honor the deceased and guide their spirit to the afterlife.
Sasak Wedding Traditions
Sasak weddings are steeped in tradition and are multi-day affairs filled with rituals and ceremonies. These include the “begawe,” a traditional proposal ceremony, and the “arek arek belo,” where the groom’s family offers gifts to the bride’s family.
Bau Nyale
This unique event is tied to the Nyale Festival and involves a nighttime hunt for sea worms. The worms are then cooked and enjoyed as a delicacy during communal feasts, strengthening bonds within the community.
Sasak Dance and Music
The Gendang Beleq ensemble, with its large drums and bamboo percussion, is a vital component of Sasak celebrations and performances. Traditional dances, such as the Peresean (stick-fighting dance) and the Cendrawasih (bird dance), also play a significant role in cultural events.
Islamic Festivals
Islam is a prevalent religion among the Sasak people, and festivals like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are celebrated with great enthusiasm. These occasions bring together families and communities for prayers, feasts, and acts of charity.
Sasak Art and Crafts
The art of handwoven textiles, pottery, and crafts like basket weaving are integral to Sasak culture. These artistic expressions are often associated with rituals, ceremonies, and daily life, showcasing the skill and creativity of the Sasak people.

Surfing in Lombok; Your complete guide
Beyond its breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant culture, and delectable cuisine, this island boasts a consistent supply of waves that cater to surfers of all levels throughout the year. Whether you’re a novice seeking your inaugural surfing experience or an experienced rider in search of remarkable swells, this destination stands as the ultimate choice for your upcoming surfing escapade.
Lombok is one of the most beautiful islands in Indonesia. Similar size to Bali but a different shape with a long south facing coastline exposed to the Indian ocean. It is the southern coastline that makes up the majority of the surf spots scattered among Lombok’s many bays.
Spectacular scenery can be found right across the island however it is the southern coastline that displays some truly picturesque landscapes with rolling terrain leading into pure white sand beaches of the southern coastline, providing spectacular vistas.
Most of the surf breaks in Lombok suit beginner to intermediate surfers except the most famous of them all “Desert Point” out on the south-west tip. Desert point has been labelled the best wave in the world by some and suits the most experienced surfers only. It has been responsible for a lot of life-threatening injuries all too frequently!
Although Lombok neighbours the westernised hustle and bustle of Bali it is very different. Often overshadowed by Bali it actually works in its favour.
Unspoiled beaches and much less commercialisation the island still possesses the raw beauty that has been lost in Bali, although Lombok is generally regarded as of lower quality and intensity than Bali’s surf spots.
Kuta Lombok is the most central base for surfers, however, to reach the range of surf spots some travel is involved whether it be a small drive by road or a required boat journey to access some surf breaks. You will be able to find out everything you need to know in the breakdown of each wave below.
Optimal surfing season
Lombok stands as a year-round surfing haven, presenting a consistent swell and an array of diverse breaks that cater to all preferences. However, the rainy season holds a special place for avid surfers. During this period, numerous surf spots come alive, yielding pristine glassy waves in locations like Seger and Are Guling. Moreover, the rain season’s charm lies in its reduced crowds, translating to more waves for enthusiasts to enjoy.
Does this imply that the dry season lacks its allure? Certainly not—each season unveils its unique surf breaks. The dry season boasts its own allure, with waves like Mawi and Desert Point thriving. These spots benefit from offshore winds and larger swells, creating splendid hollow barrels. For those seeking alternatives, the sheltered spots of Ekas, Gerupuk, and Tanjung Aan provide a great choice on calmer days.
Dry Season: May – September
Rain Season: October – April
Water Temperature: 26 – 30°C
Daytime Air Temperature: 30 – 32°C
Are Guling
Positioned as the initial bay to the west of Kuta, Are Guling serves as an intermediate to advanced surfing locale. This expansive bay offers both right and left hand waves, revealing their prime performance during the rain season spanning from October to April. Both waves are reef breaks, with the left variation characterized by its slightly shallower and sharper nature.
The wave action transpires within the central expanse of the bay. Access can be facilitated either by embarking on a boat drop or through paddling out. It’s crucial to grasp the intricacies of the currents before venturing out.

Are Guling : Right
Presenting a right hand orientation, this wave accommodates varying swell sizes, whether modest or substantial. It flourishes particularly during the ebb of low to mid-tide cycles. The experience here unfolds with options ranging from a lengthy, playful ride with a smooth wall to a swift, barrel-heavy surge.
Are Guling : Left
Located on the bay’s left side, this left hand wave boasts heightened velocity and a hollow structure, rendering a shorter ride. Its optimal performance aligns with mid-sized swells around 4 to 5 feet and the mid to high tide range. Interestingly, the left side of Are Guling tends to be less frequented compared to the right, offering a more serene surfing encounter.
Seger Kuta Reef
A short 10 minutes drive east of Kuta. All levels
Seger beach is a must-visit; not only does it deliver some fun and snappy waves, but it also offers one of the best sunset spots close to Kuta.
It’s close to Kuta with a short paddle out. At Seger, you will find both a left and a right-hand wave with the right one being more famous and consistent. This break works best in the rain season and on mid to high tide as it sits on a shallow sharp reef with plenty of sea urchins. Seger works best on small to mid-size days as it can’t hold a big swell.
Seger Right is a short fun wave with a fast takeoff. The wave is known to be shifty, and you can expect some strong currents when the swell is big and the tide is high.
Segar Left works best on a mid-tide and is more mellow than the right, making it a better option for beginners – intermediate. Seger left tends to be a favorite surf spot by many local groms.

Mawi
Situated a mere 30 minutes to the west of Kuta, Mawi stands as a breathtaking beach that beckons to both intermediate and advanced surfers.
Regarded as one of the most renowned waves in southern Lombok, Mawi enjoys its prime stature as the ultimate and consistently exceptional surf break throughout the dry season. Its allure lies in the form of an A-frame reef break, treating surfers to an exhilarating right-handed ride when faced with a smaller to midsize swell. During lower tides, the break unveils swift barreling sections, adding to the excitement.
Mawi’s left-handed counterpart showcases its versatility by accommodating a spectrum of swells. The true magic comes alive with a substantial 6 to 8 feet swell, accompanied by offshore winds. This combination sets the stage for pristine, clean open barrels that are simply captivating.
While Mawi operates year-round, its true magnificence shines during the dry season. Characterized by eastward offshore winds and a heightened consistency in swells, this season presents the peak conditions for a memorable surfing experience. On days when the swell is modest and the tide is high, Mawi transforms into a playground suitable for beginners to intermediates. However, as the swell escalates to mid to large proportions, the wave’s potency becomes evident—making it more fitting for adept surfers well-versed in handling powerful waves and robust currents.

Ekas
With two waves Ekas Inside and Ekas Outside, this is a place for all levels. Ekas works all year round being located next to the hill, protecting it from the wind in the dry season.
Ekas Inside: A fun wave for beginners to the intermediate surfers as it’s a more mellow wave. It holds a left and a right hand wave with the right being a bit steeper and shorter and the left more mellow and longer. This wave works best on a 5-6 ft swell and low to mid tide.
Ekas Outside tend to pick up more swell and is a steep left hand wave that can give barreling sections. The best time to surf is on a higher tide with an overhead SE swell.

Selong Belanak
Situated a short half-hour drive west of Kuta, Selong Belanak emerges as an exquisite stretch of coastline. This lengthy, pristine sandy haven presents a haven for beginners in the art of surfing.
This picturesque beach showcases its allure with its extensive expanse of white sand, a mere 30 minutes’ journey from Kuta. Offering a beach break setup, Selong Belanak provides an ideal playground for those stepping onto a surfboard for the very first time. Here, the focus is not on riding long, green waves, but rather on perfecting the pop-up and the art of maintaining balance atop the board.
The wave dynamics at Selong Belanak transpire over a sandy seabed, resulting in shallower waters. This element contributes to a more comforting and approachable environment, especially when contrasted with the depths of a reef break. Selong Belanak’s prime conditions align with mid tide cycles and a swell ranging from 3 to 5 feet. This versatile beach break remains surfable throughout the entire year, granting novices the opportunity to learn and grow with the waves.

Tanjung Ann
Situated a mere 15-minute drive east of Kuta, Tanjung Aan emerges as an idyllic destination suitable for surfers of all levels.
Regarded as one of the most enchanting beaches in southern Lombok, Tanjung Aan boasts a perfectly rounded bay graced with a lengthy expanse of white sandy shores, inviting both sunbathers and swimmers alike.
At the heart of this picturesque bay resides a remarkable A-frame wave, a source of unadulterated joy for surfers. During calmer days, this wave provides an exhilarating experience for beginners and longboard enthusiasts, granting them elongated, enjoyable rides. As the waves amplify in size, Tanjung Aan’s character evolves. The wave assumes greater power and presents a splendid wall that caters to surfers seeking a more dynamic challenge. However, it’s essential to be mindful of the currents, which can exhibit strength on these larger days.
The optimal surfing window aligns with the rainy season, particularly during mid to high tides. This seasonal alignment not only heightens the wave’s performance but also ensures a rewarding experience for those who venture into its waters. With its versatile offerings and stunning surroundings, Tanjung Aan stands as a true coastal treasure in Lombok.

Inside, a wave that embodies both beauty and gentleness, unfurls its allure. This elongated right-hander is a constant presence, offering a mellow ride that almost invariably satisfies. As the tide recedes, a soft grass reef graces the sea bottom, making it an inviting choice for surfers seeking a mellower encounter.
Operational for most of the year, Inside comes into its prime during the rain season. This period sees it truly shine, capable of accommodating swells of all sizes. Its appeal spans across the skill spectrum, serving as a playground for beginners to intermediates on days featuring smaller to midsize waves. On more sizable swells, the more seasoned surfers can relish in its offerings, showcasing the wave’s versatility.
Gerupuk Bay encapsulates the essence of diverse surfing experiences, making it a must-visit for those seeking a range of challenges and delights on the waves.
DonDon
Suited for both beginners and advanced surfers, DonDon boasts an A-frame wave configuration, with its left and right sides equally impressive. This wave thrives when greeted by a medium to large swell, offering a user-friendly takeoff and an elongated ride. Novices can revel in its gentle nature on a medium swell, while the experienced find their niche when faced with a more substantial swell.
Outside Right:
Positioned on an outer reef, this break thrives during smaller to midsize days, capturing ample swell energy. Characterized by a steep takeoff, it leads into a swift and barrel-heavy inside section. Multiple peaks offer choices, with the inside presenting a milder option for those less seasoned. Optimal conditions align during the rain season, provided the tide isn’t too low due to the reef’s sharp and shallow nature.
Outside Left:
Designed for advanced surfers, Outside Left delivers a swift and hollow left-hand wave experience atop a shallow reef. Its prowess unfurls with small swells, though wind sensitivity is a factor. The mid to high tide range is ideal for this break, showcasing its true potential.
Kids Point:
Catering to beginners and intermediates, Kids Point comes alive exclusively with a substantial swell. Despite its playful name, this right-hand wave boasts an enjoyable shape. A sanctuary for those not yet ready for larger conditions, it stands as an inviting option when other spots prove too imposing.
Prepare for an unforgettable adventure on the enchanting shores of Lombok, a tropical paradise.
Vegan Food in Lombok
Looking for healthy and wholesome vegan food in Lombok then look no further, we have compiled a list of vegan restaurants and options across Lombok.
Honky Tonks, Senggigi, Lombok
In Senggigi, there’s a place called Honky Tonks that’s great for vegan eating. They’re open from 3pm to midnight, Wednesday to Monday, and stay open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Since the explorers were only staying one night in Senggigi and arrived in the evening, they wanted to find vegan food.
The staff were really nice and could speak English well. They understood what the explorers wanted to eat.
The food they ordered was vegetarian nasi goreng (without egg) with crispy fried tempeh. They also got tami cap cay, which is a mix of vegetables in tasty sauce, along with fried noodles.
The meal wasn’t too expensive, tasted really good, and filled them up nicely. It was a perfect way to end a long day of travel.
Warung Vegetarian Waikuntha: A Culinary Delight in Mataram
Found at Jln Selandir 2 in Mataram, the Warung Vegetarian Waikuntha is like a hidden treasure for food lovers. It’s open every day from 8.30am to 2pm and is a simple place by the roadside that has won over the hearts (and taste buds) of the people who go there.
The experience was so enjoyable that the visitors wished they could stay in Mataram longer just to eat there again. The highlight of their meal was the ‘nasi campur’, a dish that changes its components every day. In their version, they got rice, urab salad, tofu, tempeh, eggplant curry, sweet corn fritters, satay, spicy sauce, and different imitation meats.
What’s surprising is that two big servings of ‘nasi campur’ and two lunch boxes filled with tasty food for later only cost 65,000 IDR, which is about $4.50 USD. The fact that it’s so affordable makes this place even more special, and it leaves a strong memory on the taste buds and the hopeful hearts of the people who eat there.
Maitry: A Glimpse into Mataram’s Culinary Scene
Nestled on Jln Jayengraya 16 in Mataram, Maitry holds its place as a culinary destination worth exploring. Operating hours extend from 9am to 8pm, Monday through Saturday, with a brief hiatus on Sundays. Their fleeting visit to Mataram allowed only a single day of exploration, coincidentally falling on a Sunday. In a hopeful gesture, they ventured by Maitry, in the event that it might have been an exception to its usual schedule. However, the establishment remained true to its stipulated closure on Sundays, confirming the accuracy of its listed operating hours. A couple of photographs of its exterior were taken, with the intention of aiding future seekers in locating this eatery.
Yogi Bar: A Culinary Oasis in Kuta, Lombok
Located on Jalan Pariwisata Pantai Kuta, right in the heart of Kuta, Lombok, Yogi Bar is a must-visit for food lovers. The place is open every day from 8 am to 11 pm and offers a perfect blend of delicious flavors and a relaxing atmosphere.
The travelers heard about Yogi Bar from the Happy Cow platform and its inviting beachside setting, so they decided to give it a try. However, there was a mix-up with the location on Happy Cow’s map, which led them in a different direction. Despite the confusion, they didn’t give up and eventually stumbled upon the restaurant after they had already had their lunch. Interestingly, Yogi Bar wasn’t actually situated by the beach as they had thought. It was prominently placed on the main street. The place looked charming and welcoming, with a menu that featured several vegan options. One of the highlights was the vegan nasi campur, which included flavorful red rice.
Even though their initial search was a bit uncertain, finding Yogi Bar added an unexpected twist to their food adventure, showing them the joy of discovering something delightful when least expected.

Their decision proved to be a delightful one, as the affable staff welcomed them with warmth, complementing the inviting atmosphere. To their delight, the menu showcased options tailored for vegans, embracing a diverse range of culinary preferences.
Their culinary selection comprised a quinoa and tempe salad, a creation that stood out for its substantial and delectable tempe portions. Complementing the main dish were sides of hand-cut fries and wok-fried greens in soy sauce. While the experience was overwhelmingly positive, there was a slight hiccup with the wok-fried greens – an excess of sugar detracted from the otherwise savory harmony.
In the end, their experience at Sea Salt epitomized the beauty of unexpected discoveries, with its striking ambiance, welcoming staff, and a menu that tastefully bridges culinary preferences, all set against the backdrop of the captivating coastal surroundings.
